Energy generation, distribution and management are changing dramatically and in a few years, the earlier concepts might be gone forever. The traditional gas and electric companies of today will be in a very different business, competing on the open market and possibly combining services. It is conceivable that a customer might buy gas, electricity, telephone and internet service all from one company.

That is why it is so important to monitor these changes closely, and to continue looking for opportunities to increase the energy efficiency, and to ensure adequate power for the region. Energy efficiency programs are developed as cost effective means to reduce national energy consumption, protect the environment and increase economic competitiveness. Buildings consume a significant portion of the national energy resources in most countries. With this in mind, a small residential building model is considered in this paper and a PC is used as a tool to monitor the electrical system.

It is demonstrated with a simple circuit and software, how a PC based contra1 system is able to manage all the electrical equipments inside a building, serving the dual purpose of Energy Management and Savings. The control system used is to reduce the energy wastage that is caused by the human carelessness.

For example, it is possible to forget to turn off the lights, fans and air-conditioners, leading to wastage of energy. Further the life of the electrical equipments is also reduced. A simple PC based control system with minimum hardware and creative software will enable the energy to be utilized more wisely, besides saving a lot of energy and money. In this technique, c# (through dot net) programming language is used to control the whole system. Before making a successful interface with the program of a PC it is first necessary to access data from a specific memory address. Transfer of data and control signals to the electrical equipment are operated by simple Basic commands.
